Couples Travel: Paradise on earth exists and it’s called Switzerland

Hello Spotlighters! I am back from my 2019 holidays totally energized, refreshed and of course super happy. That’s a definite sign of time well spent, isn’t it? I’m also happy that I’m finally ready to share every little detail with all of you too; my experience, the places I’ve seen, along with many useful tips that ease the way not only on my specific trip to Switzerland, but for any kind of trip you would like to go with your other half!

Couple travelers are you ready? Let’s go!

WHAT I’VE LEARNED FROM MY LATEST TRIP TO SWITZERLAND

YOU CAN FALL IN LOVE ALL OVER AGAIN

If you find yourself searching for a great way to clear your mind & soul, as well as spend some quality time with your better half, let me tell you that traveling is the ultimate answer.

I recommend traveling at least once a year to reconnect with your inner self and your loved one to maintain a balanced life and a healthy relationship. The more often you can do it the better!

To travel “there is no schedule, no date on the calendar” as one of my fav songs says. And please remember that you don’t need to be rich to enjoy beautiful places. There are destinations and solutions everywhere nowadays.

TRUE ADVENTURES NEVER COME FROM COMFORT ZONES

On this trip we decided to leave our comfort zone “at home” and become one with the destination. How? By meeting locals, interacting with every surrounding and exploring all the magic mother nature has to offer, certainly did a great job.

So, choose to go hiking to reach that spectacular lake, drive a few hours to find the little town with a lot of history behind it and talk to the person standing next to you. The outcome will thrill you!

At the end of the day adapting to “unusual” circumstances brings more satisfaction than you could ever imagine.

POSITIVE ATTITUDE IS KEY

And if you are wondering what really makes a fantastic trip, be sure it all comes from you.

Maintaining calm, smooth attitude is the key even when things don’t go as planned. These are the moments that bring couples together and make their bond stronger.

We all have moments where we get lost (even when using GPS), experience misunderstandings and other uncomfortable things, but they are part of the game when you explore foreign lands.

Laugh and look for a solution because the destination you’ve arrived by accident turns out way better than the one you were looking for in the first place.

Have an open mind to new experiences, different eating habits and cultures and you’ll be just fine!

MY BEST TIPS TO ENJOY YOUR TRIPS TO THE MAXIMUM

TIP 1: ALWAYS BE PREPARED

Being prepared is a must. Pack simple things like water, snacks, protein bars or wine and delicacies (for the romantic ones) in case you guys find a spectacular view and want to take advantage of a gorgeous sunset for example (romanticism never goes out of style).

Lost and hungry are two things nobody wants, right? So always be prepared even if you’re going to a Michelin star restaurant. It will save you time and energy.

TIP 2: HOTELS

The second thing I would recommend is downloading the Booking.com application where you can check-in from anywhere as well as find the best hotels, inns, apartments and holiday homes (for those traveling as a family) in the world. Also, excellent when you are driving to different destinations, as we did on this trip.

TIP 3: TRANSPORTATION

Last but not least, I would propose to check your transportation choices in advance. If you are going on a road trip, renting a car with Wi-Fi included instead of GPS works better.

You will have access to all the information needed straight from the web while being on the road; restaurants, attractions, tickets for parks and the most important of all, parking spots and law borders. Breaking accidentally the law in a foreign country doesn’t sound good. Does it? A little search online before crossing each border is a secure way to avoid any violations.

ROAD-TRIP TO SWITZERLAND

HOW TO GET AROUND

To enter Switzerland by driving you have to buy a Vignette (which is mandatory) that you can purchase either online or before crossing the borders. It costs $35 but some car rental agencies rent the car with the Vignette already placed. Ask the agent just to ensure it as others don’t have it included.

On this trip we decided to get to Milan to rent a car there and drive to Switzerland. A great choice if you are asking me as we greatly enjoyed the landscape views that left us stunned.

PARADISE-LIKE PLACES & ROMANTIC SPOTS YOU NEED TO SEE

LUCERNE

WHAT WE EXPLORED

Lucerne was our first stop; a city known for preserving its medieval architecture. We already knew where to park and we were ready to walk to the Old Town.

We walked from Weinmarkt to the Chapel Bridge that has become the emblem of Lucerne. The bridge features triangular paintings from 17th-century on its roof representing history events of the city.

On the way back, we entered the Jesuit Church, a catholic church designed by architects from Austria and Italy, consecrated in 1677 and completed during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. I was lucky enough to watch a beautiful wedding reception that day taking place outside which definitely fascinated us.

If you have time, walk all the way to the river until the Spreuer bridge and stop at one of the cafes on the way back. Don’t forget to visit the monument of Lion.

WHERE WE STAYED

We wanted to stay in the Interlaken area because of all the attractions around. You can find both natural beauty, shops, restaurants and even a casino.

Some suggestions to check-out:

– BEATUS Wellness- & Spa Hotel

– Grand Hotel Giessbach (Room with waterfall view)

– Lakeview Hotel (Lake view).

Remember to check the Booking.com app in advance to find a hotel that suits your budget  and make your reservation. There is always an ideal hotel for each couple and pocket.

LAUTERBRUNNEN

STAUBBACH FALLS

This waterfall is one of the 72 waterfalls in Lauterbrunnen. It was on my ‘vision board’ for many years as a place to visit with my husband in one of our upcoming trips and I was crazy excited to finally meet this town. Now, let me tell you that the real thing was far more amazing than my wildest dreams. We were literally shocked from the beauty of this waterfall and its surroundings.

The most heartwarming part was that I got to spend some time with my baby sister and her husband (which made this place even more special), who flew from Spain to meet us there. In fact, we made this whole trip a reality after their suggestion. As major travel lovers and have already been in Switzerland two years ago, we trusted their opinion without a question.

A small tip here is to arrive early to be able to easily find a quiet parking spot and climb the mountain of the Staubbach waterfall; it is a must.

– Hotel BEATUS Wellness- & Spa

Another super unique and one of a kind miracle of nature in Lauterbrunnen. It is actually a series of ten waterfalls fed by glaciers within the mountain that can be accessed through a funicular tunnel (built in 1913) with stairs and lighting.

You purchase tickets at the entrance and then an employee takes you up to waterfall 6 (through a funicular). From there you are left on your own and have to climb until waterfall 10. And believe me, it’s worth the climb!

Another useful tip here is to wear appropriate shoes (something like sneakers or climbing boots for stability; forget flip-flops or sandals) because there are slippery and wet areas. You can also wear layers of clothing which can be easily removed or put on. Going down, we made the small detour to visit the falls 5 to 1 on our way back to the valley.

In the areas below you can find bathrooms, a very nice restaurant and a souvenir shop. In my opinion it is an “once in a lifetime” experience where the views and the sounds combined with lighting make you appreciate the strength of nature like anything else. Plus, it is an excellent workout. You can thank me later girls!

P.S. Remember TIP 1? Prepare a backpack with water & snacks in case you need them for a more enjoyable climbing experience.

LAKE BLAUSEE

Although it is a small lake in Switzerland located in the Kander valley on Kandergrund at 887 meters near the Kander river, it is a gorgeous place that we also chose for a sit down picnic to taste wines and cheeses from the region (we discovered later that you can also make barbecues there since the park has its own grills). Best choice of that day!

Administratively, Blausee belongs to the Bernese Oberland and has an area of 0.64 hectares. To enter, you must buy a ticket at the door and then choose the path you want to do: go to the restaurant, picnic on the lake or hiking.

I promise you will be impressed with the color of its waters, as it seems like a magical place of fairy tales. Even though it has a very beautiful restaurant, I would recommend to have a picnic with delicacies and wines of the region like we did. You can appreciate the beauty of the lake while you are eating on your table.

Oh, and do yourself a favor and go for the romantic ride in the little boats. You will be mesmerized!

LAGO BLAUSEE

GRINDELWALD-FIRST & FIRST CLIFF WALK PRESENTED BY TISSOT

This was hands down the experience of our lives! One that as a couple we will treasure forever. Arriving very early in Grindelwald is mandatory because of the quite congested parking lot.

It’s easy to understand as the “Top of Europe- Jungfrau” is a super loved place from many tourists and when you get there you definitely see why. Patience is needed from the beginning, but it will be worth it, trust me.

You can buy tickets at the entrance and decide in which station you want to get off depending on the activity you want to do: Guys, you have to do the experience “First Cliff Walk by Tissot” and climb the vertiginous heights from the West side of the first summit until you reach the observation deck. The terrace rises 45 meters towards the void.

If being on top of the world is something you dreamed many times in your life, get ready, because the views of the mountain slopes, the valley, the rocks and their layers are unbelievable and will surely make you feel like it.

A great idea is to have lunch at the restaurant enjoying the breathtaking views located up there, but we did it the other way around. We ate at the restaurant that was at the entrance of the climb and went hiking to Lake Bachalpsee.

GRINDELWALD-FIRST & FIRST CLIFF WALK PRESENTADO POR TISSOT

LAKE BACHALPSEE

This lake on Grindelwald in the Bernese Oberland is located at a height of 2,265 meters and has become one of the most popular walks among tourists and locals. The walk is 90 minutes, but the uphill was only 20 minutes; then it goes up, but more leveled.

There is no cafeteria when you get there; so, again bring your water and snacks! Don’t worry! There are bathrooms, although quite basic.

The views are stunning and will make the perfect background for awesome Instagram pictures. The landscape is magnificent, since the lake reflects the mountains and I can’t imagine how beautiful it will be during Winter with snow. It must be a spectacle.

Despite we wanted to experience the “Fly like an Eagle” attraction and throw the four of us together in the gigantic eagle from Schreckfeld to First (72 km/h), sadly it was already closed when we got off from Bachalpsee.

When on vacation, do something fun & adventurous; I can’t recommend it enough. This experience remains in our “bucket list” for another trip to Switzerland for sure.

LAGO BACHALPSEE

We could not leave Switzerland without seeing the medieval village Gruyères (in the Gruyère district in the canton of Friborg); an important place in the upper valley of the Saane / Sarine river and the land where Gruyère cheese was created. It is located on the top of an 82-meter-high hill overlooking the Saane Valley and Lake Gruyère.

We went on a Sunday and it was market day, so we couldn’t appreciate the medieval architecture of the place at its best, but we still stumbled upon many interesting exhibitions of art, jewelry and curiosities.

We ended up trying the famous fondue in the restaurant “Chalet de Gruyères” and the typical double cream dessert with raspberries (even though, we are not fans of creams, but we just had to taste it).

RHINE FALLS

We went back to Switzerland returning from the wine route we made to French Alsace (which I will share with you next in another article linked) due to our desire to see the most powerful waterfall in Switzerland and Europe.

The falls are located on the Upper Rhine on the border between the cantons of Schaffhausen and Zurich, between the municipalities of Neuhausen Am Rheinfall and Laufen-Uhwiesen / Dachsen, next to the city of Schaffhausen, in northern Switzerland.

We arrived at Neuhausen Am Rheinfall where you must pay parking and walk down. Apart from the falls, you will also check out the views of Laufen Castle and the surrounding area. If you prefer something more exciting, I’d recommend to take the boat trip that makes different routes along the river.

You will be impressed from the power of the falls, the color of the waters and the birds that are flying around. It’s like a magical scene taken out of heaven and may I say very romantic too! Just walking by holding hands or sitting there for a bit to appreciate the greatness is priceless. Of course, there are good restaurants and souvenir shops for those who collect or want to buy gifts for their friends & family.

STEIN AM RHEIN

As all good things come to an end, we had to say goodbye to Switzerland. Our last stop was one of the most beautiful villages in this country ‘Stein am Rhein’ located on the west of Lake Constance (Bodensee), in the northeast of it.

This town is known for its preserved medieval half-timbered houses and painted facades, grouped around Rathausplatz in the old town. Here, you can see the Weisser Adler that still retains the oldest Renaissance mural in Switzerland, created by Thomas Schmid in 1520 and is now converted into a Hotel-Restaurant.

This picturesque little town received the first Wakker Price award for “The Association for the Protection of Swiss Heritage”. You just feel like time has stopped while walking the streets until you meet the river. Just amazing!

STEIN AM RHEIN
