Christmas Confessions of a Fashion Blogger

Yes, we are in that exciting time of the year again – December, a month of giving.  I once heard from my husband, during one of our cozy sessions together, that if you have a fruitful year, endeavor to give out to family, friends and other people around you.  This, according to him, is a beautiful way of gaining more blessings. While thinking about what to present to my readers as the Christmas gift, I was drifted into the thoughts about one my favorite articles, which I wrote while working for the Examiner.com.  The piece, which was centered on the Christmas confession of the local people within the city, was an exciting one.  I had several people partaking in the story, and I ended up forming amusing accounts from every responder that voluntarily participated. These same people are those I usually refer to as my “305 people.”  Interesting, right?  Yes.  I was convinced of the need to relive the moments, so, I have decided to do something similar this year by relaying my Christmas Confessions. I am confident that these confessions will help readers understand me better and of course my priorities and principles.

Let’s go!

My Top 3 Confessions

1- My Nerves, Lights and the Camera

On most occasions when I interview a superstar, I am mostly overwhelmed – the bigger – regarding fame – the interviewee, the more curious and restless I am prior to the interview.  In extreme cases, I could hardly sleep, for instance, when I interviewed the superstar designer, Kenneth Cole.

In the year 2013, I received an invitation from Tara INK to hold an exclusive interview with Kenneth Cole, during the launching of his book titled “This is a Kenneth Cole Production.” The book speaks about his 30 years of hard work in the design industry. As usual, I couldn’t sleep – I was busy trying to establish the right questions, while going through his extraordinary resume of his work spanning several years.

It was even worse, considering the fact that the interview was scheduled to hold in the morning. I considered forcing myself to relax a bit after waking on the d-day, so that my face could deflate a little before the interview.  However, I brushed aside that thought – concerning relaxing face – because I can’t afford to miss the chance of meeting such as an iconic personality, and I was very excited about holding an exclusive interview with him. For me, it was a rare opportunity, which only a few could be entitled to.

My nervousness elevated once we reached Bloomingdale’s Aventura – the reception’s location. During this moment, I was busy reminiscing how I will anchor the interview with Mr. Cole, the perfect approach, the tone of voice, among other crucial things. I wanted a perfect outing!  Immediately I reached the area where the icon was speaking; I felt some rumbles within my leg while my mind kept saying “control yourself!” As I move closer to the registration table, I saw two other bloggers and a TV journalist who were also standing by the entrance.  I felt at ease for the first time, and I started discussing with them. Amazingly, during the conversation, the first theme of discussion was how nervous they were.  I tried to assess the voice of one of them and I realized that she was far more nervous than I was.

Is it not incredible how our mentality change as human beings when we realized that others feel the same way we feel? In fact, it will interest you to know that when I discovered that there is no shame in being a little bit nervous, and combined with the reality that it has happened in many other similar presses, I regained my strength, and self-confidence – and this made my interview with the designer much more comfortable and productive.

I’m proud to say that I engaged the designer freely and conducted the interview without any fear. It was a fantastic experience because as an individual, the best meeting you can have is one where the conversation is natural.  You can see the effect from the pictures taken.

Moral of the lesson: “Do not stop from pursuing your goal because of nervousness.”

2- An Exclusive and Beyond

As of 2014, while still writing for Examiner.com and my blog, I had developed a healthy relationship with many publicists, all thanks to the awareness created by my job. Consequently, I was asked to moderate an interview session featuring prominent designers of the Miami Fashion Week.  Notably among them is Agatha Ruiz de la Prada – a famous and successful Spanish Designer.

The Miami Fashion Week (MFW) was slated for the Miami Beach Convention Center, and my interview was fixed for the morning, and it was supposed to be a private interview sessions with the designers.

By the time I met and introduced myself to the MFW publicist, the first thing I was told was that the designer was very busy, and instead, I should meet her assistant who will be responsible for answering every question in place of the designer.  Honestly, I was disappointed. Just as we were about to start, another issue came up (Agatha was awarded her collection that same night; hence, everywhere was kind of rowdy) concerning the production of the show. The first assistant left but replaced himself with another assistant who was very kind. However, as we were about to begin again (with the new assistant), the organizers requested the table – they wanted it for some other purposes. We were forced to move to another conducive center.  We almost resumed the session, until the second assistance was also called for another problem, and she had to leave immediately.

At this point, I was confounded and had little clue on what to do to salvage the situation. Most of the press present began to leave as it seemed like that was the only available option. However, I remained resolute to conduct the interview. Hence, I waited, and amazingly, it wasn’t ten minutes after others left that the publicist showed and apologized. Subsequently, she took me to Agatha. If only I had decided to leave like others, I would have missed the chance to hold such a top interview.

In summary, I interviewed Agatha while preparing the same pieces she used for her runway presentation during that night. And what was expected to be an interview like others changed to the most exciting experience I ever had, because I got to see the collection several hours before it was showcased on the runway.

Here is a plus: Agatha gave me her book titled “1000 Dresses by Agatha Ruiz De La Prada” and autographed it as a compensation for my wait. Since that time, I have become a big fan of her collections. It is not only because of her amazing collections but also due to her humble and kind personality. I have subsequently met the iconic designer again that night – in fulfilment of her promise to share a nice photo together after her show. Hence, I had an exclusive and beyond.

Moral of the lesson: Never give up!

3- 911 FASHION-RESCUE

Whenever the Miami Fashion Week is close, I always make sure that I am looking good to ensure that my dresses fit me better.

In 2012, my exercise routine was scheduled for three times a week, but as the date of MFW got nearer, I changed to five days a week and continued for three months before the D-day. On the opening date, I had achieved my goal- I was size two – and thus fulfill my long-standing fantasy of wearing a short black dress with bands.  Why? It was trendy as at that time.

On that evening, I refused to eat well before I left for the interviews as I rushed to make it to the venue before the start of the shows and exhibitions. And I started the interviews  alongside photo shoots, thus I wasn’t able to eat there. I was on the last lap of the Q and A session with the designers, and I had Viviana Gabeiras next to attend to.  We were at it when my husband – handling the photos – brought me a shot of the latest liquor, which they were currently promoting.

Without any question, I drank the shot and proceeded to meet to the designer who was waiting. Suddenly, in the middle of the session, I felt a consistent spin in my head – everything turned black.  Moments later, I began to feel cold, but I didn’t stop the interview cause her speech was inspiring, but I cannot recall right now – a point which denote how serious my feeling was. When I looked around, I couldn’t find any chair because the reception was all-standing, and thus, I was even more exhausted.

I started to look here and there as I was losing hope of getting a seat, or lie down, or whatever could help me. Despite my state of health, I didn’t call for help until I began to black out. I summoned all my energy to whisper to my husband faintly, “I am not feeling okay,” and subsequently passed out.

By the time I regained my consciousness, I was sitting on a chair with ice cubes all over me. It was then that my husband told me that he panicked and almost call 911.

Can you possibly imagine that scenario, with my short dress? All thanks to Viviana, I was taken to a seat with a perfect dissimulation, because I realized that they did a fantastic job as people reacted as if nothing happened when I woke up.

Subsequently, Viviana and I became good friends, and we have had good and exciting moments together in the Miami Fashion Industry. And jokingly, whenever I meet her sons, they would claim they met me when I fainted for the first time…but in a very fashionable way!

Moral of the lesson: For those who love fashion, don’t ever miss the glamor, not even fainting.

This is a Kenneth Cole Production”.
