In The Name of Gucci: The Story Behind the Brand

I just finished reading the book “In the name of Gucci” by Patricia Gucci (a memoir written by a direct descendant of Guccio Gucci—Patricia’s grandfather and the company’s founder). As a fashionista, I was crazy to learn the history behind Aldo Gucci (father of Patricia), the man responsible for making the legendary fashion label the powerhouse it is today…but Patricia brought so much more with her bittersweet tribute.

The book shares the story of Aldo and Bruna, the woman he fell in love with when she was just eighteen. He always returned to her in the three decades he spent crisscrossing the globe to build his empire; and whose hand he held as he died.

The evolution of Patricia’s relationship with her parents is told here too—from her years as a roving ambassador and the first-ever woman in the family to elected to the Gucci board directors, to when Aldo’s three sons, who betrayed him in a notorious coup, were shunned and Patricia made his sole, universal heir.

In the Name of Gucci grabs you from the beginning and doesn’t let you go until the very end, with all the details about the enduring love of Patricia’s parents, the glamour of Gucci, Celebrities (Princess Grace of Monaco, Rita Hayworth, Princess Charles, Elizabeth Taylor and Frank Sinatra were regulars) and how this brand was expanded to every corner of the globe.

At the end of the book, you feel like you have learned so much from Aldo (the first Italian to set up luxury goods retails operations in the United States, paving the way for the “Made in Italy” phenomenon) and his brilliant marketing ideas in establishing Gucci—one of the most iconic brands.  The readers are inspired by Aldo’s tenacity, how he looked after his family’s interests, and get melancholic about his final days.

The book doesn’t have a happy ending but it gives you so much to learn about fashion branding and so much to think about family relations and love. Patricia got me with her message that is definitely about Love, the most valuable thing in life.

This book is also perfect for fashion lovers and entrepreneurs; I will treasure this first edition, forever— I hope Hollywood make a movie about it in the future.

“In the Name of Gucci”: La Historia Detrás De La Marca
