The Tommy Hilfiger Group announced the launch of the limited edition footwear collection designed by Tommy Hilfiger and George Esquivel. Featuring brogue and loafer styles for men and women, the shoes are handmade in California by skilled craftsmen using premium, locally-sourced leathers and materials. The collection was launched on September 1, 2013, at Tommy Hilfiger stores in New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, Paris, London and Tokyo, and on tommy.com.
“It has been a pleasure to collaborate with George Esquivel to create a capsule collection of unique footwear that blends classic styles with a fresh twist,” said Tommy Hilfiger. “I first met George through the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund program and was immediately drawn to his unique take on the classics. He designed an exclusive brogue for my Fall 2013 men’s runway show during New York Fashion Week, and I loved the idea of taking our partnership to the next level by developing a full collection around this style.”
The designs combine Tommy Hilfiger’s trademark preppy aesthetic with Esquivel’s signature quirky details, including bright outsoles, prominent stitching and antiqued leather washing. The designs were inspired by vintage styles with a modern twist, including hand-punched perforations and hand-appliqued logos. The ‘Tommy Hilfiger + Esquivel’ logo has been burned into the leather using a hot branding iron. Soles and heels are polished individually using layers of polishes and creams. The results are unique but elegant, whimsical yet sophisticated. Just 900 pairs of shoes have been produced for the collection, and each pair is assigned a one-of-a-kind shoe number, included in the shoe box.
“It has been a great experience to collaborate with Tommy Hilfiger on this collection,” said George Esquivel. “Tommy is so supportive of other designers in the industry and I think our collaboration really epitomizes the spirit of the CFDA and the Vogue Fashion Fund programs. We knew we wanted to focus on classic styles and give them a unique edge. The Tommy twist comes out in the rugged textures, unexpected colors and interesting details. I’m very proud of our outcome.”
To correspond to the collection launch, a unique digital campaign will invite bloggers to participate in a “co-creative process.” Selected bloggers will be invited to meet George Esquivel at his LA studio, where they will have the opportunity to personalize their own shoes to give away to their followers.
Hilfiger and Esquivel’s relationship was strengthened in 2011 during the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund’s “Americans in Paris” program, of which Esquivel was a participant. The initiative was created as a global showcase for emerging and aspiring American designers. For four seasons, Tommy Hilfiger has supported the program as a mentor, venturing to Paris each year to share information and expertise with the participating designers.
