Miami Film Festival 2017: The Handsome Devil

The  annual Miami Film Festival commenced on Friday, March 3rd and wraps up Sunday, March 12th, 2017.

This year, Winter Party Festival partnered with Miami Film Festival for a special screening of the Irish film Handsome Devil.

Handsome Devil at Miami Film Festival.

In this comedic drama, sixteen- year old Ned (Fionn O’Shea) seeks to draw as little attention to himself as possible when he is sentenced to boarding school.

He befriends tough rugby player Connor (Nicholas Galitzine) in which they form a friendship bonded by music. Connor struggles with his sexuality and this is a secret only Ned knows.

Irish director John Butler, was able to capture perfectly the years of teenage angst and the pressure that adolescent boys have to be “manly.”

When macho-man Connor starts to hang out more with ordinary Ned, his rugby teammates start questioning and turning against him.

Nicholas Galitzine opens up about the film.

Actor Nicholas Galitzine talks about an impactful scene of the movie and says “I don’t want to get too political but particularly in this country, I think it’s really important for everyone to stand together as one, I know that I went to a school that the way you’re supposed to be a man when you’re fifteen years old can be particularly scarring” he adds.

“I know that when I was young I was a very sensitive kid” the actor says.

A meaningful message!

The film reveals how misogyny and homophobia are just some of the everyday struggles that some kids face in school.

As a result, with this movie, they hope to eventually breakup this clique that is still common in this day and age.

In other words, this truly heart-warming and inspiring Handsome Devil” is a story about friendship and coming out clean. Being true to yourself is the easiest way to navigate through life.

Volunteer coordinator of MFF, Carolina Garcia says that the opening night was the biggest night they’ve had yet. She says “Miami is really picking up and getting the idea of the film world… and that’s exciting.”
