Lisu Vega and her First Solo Exhibition: ‘El Cuerpo de la Obra’. MFS

One of the greatest gifts that our city has received over time has been the arrival of many artists and fashion designers who have come to live here, pursuing the American dream. In return and in appreciation for their talents, Miami has welcomed them as their own, giving them the best of it. This is the case of our great local artist and Venezuelan designer, Lisu Vega.

Last Saturday, Vega presented her first “Solo” Exhibition “El Cuerpo de la Obra” at ‘Laundromat Art Space‘ with great success — a dream this artist had for a long time before her arrival in Miami while she still was living in Venezuela.

We have seen her working hard, becoming a pioneer in wearable art and gaining recognition over the years–including the unforgettable award of Miami Fashion Week in 2014, where she won the first place in the uniform competition of Eastern Airlines, where Vega remains as a head designer.

We have closely followed her achievements, finding her designs in editorials of very important magazines and many posts in fashion blogs dedicated to her art.

Interviewing Vega in her first “SOLO” was a must, it was something that our Fashion blog could not ignore, we had to meet her new sustainable collection ‘Alana’ and give our readers accurate information… here is our conversation…

Lissette Rondon (MFS): How do you feel in your first SOLO exhibition?

Lisu Vega: Very happy because “El Cuerpo de la Obra” is an exhibition where I could capture in three installations that the roots of my artistic work and design are based on experimental engraving and that the body is a canvas where I can embody my emotions.

Lissette (MFS): Every Exhibition has a story behind, tell us yours …

Lisu: My work is based on art and my involvement with experimental engraving and recycling. Based on this premise, I have developed over the years my artistic designs, where I use clothing and body as canvas like I said before. I am a woman who loves to challenge myself and not pigeonholed myself in anything.

Lissette (MFS): Tell us about the title “El Cuerpo de la Obra,” it is true that was inspired by a book?

Lisu: The title belongs to the work of my teacher Víctor Fuenmayor; it is a tribute to him. This book has been in my life and has become a reference book for many artists.

Lissette (MFS): Let’s talk about the collection and your source of inspiration

Lisu: “Alana Collection” is my first fully sustainable ready-to-wear collection, it has been the most challenging of all—I had to pause with prints and work with solid fabrics which I could reuse each material and making pieces of art as clothing.

Lissette (MFS): We were very impressed by your hand knitted accessories. Is it true that they are unique pieces?

Lisu: Yes, they are unique pieces in which I explore the drawing through the ropes, and I am creating in some pieces my own knitted, they are very organic structures, lightweight that adhere to the body of women who wear them.

Lissette (MFS): You also have the “Resistencia” collection in the exhibition – the one you dedicated to the fallen people in Venezuela. Tell us a little about this protest that you continue to make against the government of Venezuela.

Lisu: As long as this deplorable government exists, my fight against them will continue. “Resistencia” was a collection that was made to make a catharsis of my emotions and my frustration as Venezuelan and each piece will be donated to the foundations that will help the neediest people there. I am showcasing this collection again because it is very important to show that my work goes beyond art and design – my denouncement will always be present in my work and more when it comes to my people.

Lissette (MFS): We read in a Facebook post from you that many years ago in Venezuela, your biggest dreams were to make an exhibition here in the USA. How do you feel now that it is a reality?

Lisu: Doing my first SOLO was a big dream, it has been a unique experience, full of satisfaction.

Lissette (MFS): Tell us more about the production of the event, from the audiovisuals to the amazing fabrics that are decorating the ceiling of your exhibition.

Lisu: The development, production, and execution was my responsibility, but I must thank my talented team who strengthened the three installations, especially Mauisa Parada, the choreographer and talented woman who believes in my work, listens to my ideas and strengthens them with her knowledge to make them a reality. DJ Musicat was in charge of developing a piece of music during the performance of my collection called “Alana”. A talented woman named Alex, along with her wife–they were 100% available for my work. My sponsors who support my work such as “Brugal Makeup” and “Hola INK”. The Hunting House for its advertising strategy and my collaborators, Juan Henriquez and Nelson Gonzalez. This team is my creative family!

Lissette (MFS): This is something that we are starting to do, so our readers know a little more about the human part of each local designer. I will ask you 10 questions that you will try to answer with just one word.

Uno de los mayores regalos que nuestra ciudad ha recibido a lo largo del tiempo ha sido la llegada de muchos artistas y diseñadores de moda que han venido a vivir aquí, persiguiendo el sueño americano. A cambio y en apreciación por sus talentos, Miami los ha recibido como suyos, dándoles lo mejor de ella. Este es el caso de nuestra gran artista local y diseñadora venezolana, Lisu Vega.

El sábado pasado, Vega presentó con gran éxito su primera exposición (SOLO) “El Cuerpo de la Obra” en “Laundromat Art Space”, un sueño que esta artista tuvo durante mucho tiempo antes de su llegada a Miami cuando aún vivía en Venezuela.

La hemos visto trabajar duro, convirtiéndose en una pionera en ‘wearable art’ ganando reconocimiento a lo largo de los años, incluyendo el inolvidable premio de Miami Fashion Week en el 2014, donde se alzó con el primer lugar en la competencia de uniformes de Eastern Airlines, donde aún sigue como diseñadora principal.

Hemos seguido de cerca sus logros, encontrando sus diseños en editoriales de revistas muy importantes y muchas publicaciones en blogs de moda dedicados a su arte.

Entrevistar a Vega en su primer “SOLO” era un MUST, algo que nuestro blog de moda no podía dejar pasar, teníamos que conocer su nueva colección sustentable “Alana” y dar a nuestros lectores información precisa sobre todo … aquí está nuestra conversación …

Lissette Rondon (MFS): ¿Cómo te sientes en tu primera exposición SOLO: “El Cuerpo de la Obra”?

Lisu Vega: Muy feliz porque “El Cuerpo de la Obra” es una exposición donde pude captar en tres instalaciones que las raíces de mi trabajo artístico y de diseño se basan en el grabado experimental y que el cuerpo es un lienzo donde puedo plasmar mis emociones.

Lissette (MFS): Cada exposición tiene una historia detrás, cuéntanos la tuya.

Lisu: Mi trabajo parte del arte y mi vivencia con el grabado experimental y reciclado. Basándome en esta premisa, a lo largo de los años he desarrollado mis diseños artísticos, donde utilizo la vestimenta y el cuerpo como canvas, como dije antes. Soy una mujer que me encanta desafiarme y no encasillarme en nada.

Lissette (MFS): Cuéntanos sobre el título “El Cuerpo de la Obra”, ¿es cierto que se inspiró en un libro?

Lisu: El título pertenece a la obra de mi maestro Víctor Fuenmayor; Es un homenaje a él. Este libro ha estado en mi vida y se ha convertido en un libro de referencia para muchos artistas.

Lissette (MFS): Hablanos sobre la colección ‘Alana’ y su fuente de inspiración.

Lisu: “Alana” es mi primera colección de ready-to-wear completamente sustentable, ha sido la más retadora, tuve que hacer una pausa con el estampado, trabajar con telas sólidas donde pudiese re-utilizar cada material, haciendo piezas de arte como vestimentas.

Lissette (MFS): Nos impresionaron mucho los accesorios tejidos a mano. ¿Es cierto que son piezas únicas ?

Lisu: Si, son piezas únicas donde exploro el dibujo por medio de la cuerda y elaboro en algunas piezas mi propio tejido, son estructuras bien orgánicas, livianas que se adhieren al cuerpo de las mujeres que las usan.

Lissette (MFS): Acabamos de ver que tienes también en exhibición la colección ‘Resistencia’ que le dedicaste a los caídos en Venezuela; háblanos un poco sobre esta protesta que continúas haciendo en contra del Gobierno en Venezuela.

Lisu: Mientras este deplorable gobierno exista mi lucha seguirá. “Resistencia” fue una colección que se realizó para hacer catarsis de mis emociones y mi frustración como venezolana, cada pieza será donada a fundaciones que ayudarán a los más necesitados allá. Esta colección la muestro de nuevo porque es muy importante mostrarle al espectador que mi trabajo va más allá del arte y el diseño–la denuncia siempre estará presente en mi trabajo y mucho más cuando se trate de mi pueblo.

Lissette (MFS): Leímos en un post tuyo en Facebook que hace muchos años atrás aún en Venezuela, uno de tus sueños más grandes era realizar una exhibición aquí en USA. ¿Qué sientes ahora que es una realidad ?

Lisu: Hacer mi SOLO era un gran sueño, ha sido una experiencia única, llena de satisfacciones.

Lissette (MFS): Cuéntanos más sobre la producción del evento, desde los audiovisuales hasta las telas que están decorando el techo de la exhibición.

Lisu: El desarrollo, la producción y ejecución de obras fue de mi autoría; pero debo agradecer a mi talentoso equipo que fortalecieron las tres instalaciones—a Mauisa Parada, coreógrafa y mujer talentosa, quien escucha mis ideas, las fortalece con sus conocimientos y las hace realidad. Dj Musicat quien se encargó de desarrollar una pieza musical para el performance de mi nueva colección sustentable “Alana”. Una mujer talentosa llamada Ale, junto a su esposa por estar 100% disponibles para mi trabajo. Mis sponsors que apoyan mi trabajo ‘Brugal Makeup’ y ‘Hola INK’. ‘The Hunting House’ por su estrategia publicitaria y mis colaboradores, Juan Henriquez y Nelson Gonzalez. ¡Este equipo es mi familia creativa!
