Q and A: Fabrizio De Castro, A Fashion Star

A few years ago, Colombian fashion designer, Fabrizio De Castro, came to Miami with a vision in mind—building his own empire label!

In 2013, he successfully held his first fashion presentation at Miami Fashion Week, opening so many doors. Great opportunities such as: Art Basel, the Billboards, celebrity red carpets, among others, led him to a recognition, like his own official Fabrizio De Castro Day (October 17) by former Miami Beach Mayor, Matty Bower, and former Miami Beach Commissioner, Michael Gongora.

Before long, De Castro became known in our city as “the fashion transformer” by his unique style for combining art, colors, and innovation, highlighting simplicity and affordability in his collections, and his Parisian style catwalks (influenced by the French designers during his studies at the institute Esmod).

In our passion to report about the most happening fashion news in our city, we got an exclusive interview during his latest presentation in Wynwood, where this raising star talks about his collection, inspiration, next projects, and more…

Miami Fashion Spotlight: Tell us about this show here  ( Private Key) tonight.

Fabrizio  De Castro: I presented my “ready to wear” spring-summer 2017 collection, called “Dukes of the sun.” The collection featured about 30 designs.

MFS: Tell us about the palette of colors and about the fabrics?

FDC: The collection began with the color emerald green. We continued with pearl, gold, and white, closing with black and gold. Between the fabrics, we had organza, silk, lace and cotton.

MFS: What was your inspiration for this collection?

FDC: The collection was inspired by “The Dukes of the Sun” characters, who over time, came to become dukes with sunlight, where they entered had countenance star of light and designs used could seduce or charm the public…

MFS: The collection has a favorite design. Why?

FDC: All my designs are favorites, but one I love was a long, organza skirt that goes to the floor in tissues, accompanied with a transparent black blouse with a black lace bustier under. When I saw it on the runway during the test, I imagined a woman walking in the desert with a magic skirt.

MFS: What is your next project?

FDC: I am director of “Mr. Black” magazine, targeting men of influence in Miami and South Florida, including Fort Lauderdale. I’m also preparing my next show for “Swim Week”, which will be in July. I will present two Resort 2017 collections (male and female).

MFS: Could you define yourself and your work with just three words?

FDC: Exclusive, elegant, and what would be the third word … Professional.

MFS: We have seen your work grow rapidly. What do you think is the secret of the acceptance of your designs so fast in our market?

FDC: Getting attention from the public requires experience as a designer, something that only time can provide, and after eleven years of experience, I have been sharpening the pencil and refining the pin. Creativity is a mental development we can achieve when inspired. We must also keep up with the trends used for the next season (in advance). I think you must have an artistic eye, if you do not have an eye that captures all, it is very difficult to succeed in this career, because it’s all about details.

MFS: What advice would you give to emerging designers coming to Miami this year?

FDC: It’s definitely a very beautiful career, at the same time, very egocentric with many ups and downs. My recommendation is to enjoy it to the fullest, while you’re developing ways to capture your universe and part of your personality in your designs with creativity.

MFS: Any predictions on trends for 2017?

FDC: Yes, of course …  many citrus colors come in 2017, along with green, but not just any green—the green that is almost mint … white and gold also make appearances again!
